Long Review
Plot Summary
In Dissolution, C.J. Sansom vividly brings to life the turbulent reign of Henry VIII. With commissioners being sent to close down monasteries one by one, this is a time of great fear for monks across the country.
The story follows hunchbacked reformist lawyer Matthew Shardlake. Following the murder of one of Thomas Cromwell’s commissioners at Scarnsea Monastery, Shardlake is sent to Scarnsea to investigate and finish what the murdered commissioner started.
What lies ahead for Shardlake is endless secrets pointing towards corruption and greed. The more he digs, the more loose ends he finds. Between questioning his own beliefs and not having enough answers, he becomes trapped in a web of lies that threatens not only his investigation but his life too.
Character Overview
Shardlake is an incredibly likeable protagonist. His hunchback sets him apart from typical detective figures, adding to his endearing character. While his appearance isolates him in Tudor society, his resilience and strong sense of integrity keep him grounded in his search for justice.
Despite the common reputation of Tudor lawyers as dishonest, Shardlake is unwavering in his pursuit of the truth, even if it comes at a personal cost. His introspective nature adds depth to his character. He constantly reflects on his beliefs, bringing a thoughtful complexity to his role in the investigation.
The supporting characters are well crafted, each highlighting different aspects of Tudor society during the dissolution of the monasteries. Their conflicting viewpoints enrich the story and broaden the historical perspective.

Themes and Historical Context
The dissolution of the monasteries serves as not just a backdrop, but as a driving force in the story. It presents a powerful clash between politics and religion, raising questions about authority, faith, and personal values. The severe impact of Cromwell’s policies on the monks and English society as a whole is well portrayed, adding tension and urgency to the investigation.
Shardlake’s journey also involves a personal quest for moral clarity. He is faced with many difficult questions, such as how far one should go in search of the truth and at what personal cost. His inner conflicts emphasise the burden of integrity during a time filled with moral compromise, adding a thought provoking layer to the story.
Corruption and Power is another theme central to the narrative. Shardlake uncovers the hidden extent of corruption hidden in monasteries, where many officials he meets are motivated by greed. He encounters them abusing their authority in order to protect their interests of self-preservation, illustrating the ethical compromises made by those in positions of influence.
These themes are incorporated seamlessly throughout the book, allowing Dissolution to not only offer a compelling mystery but a valuable insight into the moral challenges of Tudor England.
Writing Style
Dissolution unfolds as a slow burner, the investigation progressing methodically to masterfully build tension. This pacing is perfectly suited to the book’s unravelling mystery and historical exploration. The dialogue is thoughtfully crafted to reflect the time period, enhancing the narrative’s captivating quality.
Sansom skilfully provides vivid descriptions of characters, landscapes, and concepts. He strikes a fine balance between meticulous detail and subtlety, creating a deeply immersive experience.

Overall Impressions
Dissolution is a superbly crafted historical mystery that features strong character development and an immensely compelling plot. Sansom’s careful attention to detail vividly brings the Tudor era to life, overflowing with political intrigue, religious conflict, and moral complexity. The gradual build of suspense allows readers to appreciate the significance and impact of each revelation throughout the story.
The key themes encourage readers to reflect on the the difficult dilemmas faced by individuals in Tudor society. This draws them deeper into the narrative. Sansom’s skilful blending of historical facts with fictional elements creates a rich environment for entertainment and thoughtful exploration.
Shardlake is presented as an admirable protagonist, navigating the investigation with determination and integrity. Sansom does a splendid job of making the stakes feel both personal and historical through Shardlake’s quest for the truth amid the chaos and corruption of his time.
