I’ve finally moved past a reading slump and am excited to share this book review with you.

Today, I’m sharing my thoughts on the novel Dissolution by C.J. Sansom. It’s the first book in the Shardlake series. After reading two books of the series (the fifth then first, oops) a few years ago, I decided it was time to finally enjoy the entire series in order.

While I knew I would love Dissolution again the second time round, I didn’t expect to be so thoroughly gripped by the story. I found myself heavily invested in every twist and turn, especially towards the end!

• Slow burner with strong historical and political references could feel excessive for readers only invested in the mystery
• Page count could be daunting for some

In Dissolution, C.J. Sansom vividly brings to life the turbulent reign of Henry VIII. With commissioners being sent to close down monasteries one by one, this is a time of great fear for monks across the country.

The story follows hunchbacked reformist lawyer Matthew Shardlake. Following the murder of one of Thomas Cromwell’s commissioners at Scarnsea Monastery, Shardlake is sent to Scarnsea to investigate and finish what the murdered commissioner started.

What lies ahead for Shardlake is endless secrets pointing towards corruption and greed. The more he digs, the more loose ends he finds. Between questioning his own beliefs and not having enough answers, he becomes trapped in a web of lies that threatens not only his investigation but his life too.

Character Overview

Shardlake is an incredibly likeable protagonist. His hunchback sets him apart from typical detective figures, adding to his endearing character. While his appearance isolates him in Tudor society, his resilience and strong sense of integrity keep him grounded in his search for justice.
